How Much Does Custom 3D Printing Cost? A Buyer's Guide - What Actually Drives the Price?
"How much will this cost?" is usually the first question after "can you make this?" — and the honest answer is: it depends on a handful of specific factors, not a flat rate. Here's what actually moves the price, so you can get a rough idea before requesting a quote.
What Drives the Cost of a Custom Print
Size and material volume — Bigger objects use more material and more machine time, which is the single biggest cost driver. A small keyring costs far less than a large centrepiece.
Complexity of the design — Intricate detail, multiple colours, or moving/interlocking parts take longer to design, test and print than a simple shape.
Finishing work — Multi-part prints often need gluing, sanding, occasional painting, or assembly. The more hand-finishing a piece needs, the more that adds to the price. The more the printer can take care of, the cheaper it will be.
Quantity — Per-unit cost usually drops as order size grows, since design time gets spread across more pieces. A single one-off custom gift costs more per unit than a batch of 100 identical merchandise giveaways.
Material choice — Standard plastics (PLA) are the most affordable option which is another reason why we opt to print predominantly with PLA.
Roughly What to Expect
Small, simple items (keyrings, small favours) generally sit at the lower end of the price range. Larger or more detailed pieces — centrepieces, props, multi-part designs — cost more, largely driven by print time and finishing work rather than material alone. Batch orders bring the per-unit price down significantly compared to a single custom piece.
The only way to get an accurate number is a quote on your specific design — general online estimates rarely account for the finishing and design work a truly custom piece needs.
